As you begin the holiday season, we at COMPPA invite you to show your support for community radios in Mesoamerica. This month, as families and friends gather together to celebrate, much of the news that reaches us from Latin America is a distorted mix of violence and disinformation that creates more fear than hope.

But many of us also know the importance of sharing true stories of community organizing, that remind us that another world is possible. The stories of grassroots communities who have been ignored by the mainstream media deciding to build their own radios, conduct their own interviews, tell their own stories, and imagine a better future.

These radios have joined together into the Mesoamerican Network of Indigenous and Garífuna Community Radios, and are using radio as a tool for social justice. And now, with your support, they can start transmitting and publishing online, reaching broader audiences and covering stories you won’t find anywhere else.

Our work is dedicated to strengthening community media from the grassroots up. This year we have been hard at work developing diverse resources from workbooks to online platforms to serve the specific needs of community journalists: we’ve designed and programmed a unique open-source online platform for independent media makers (check it out here) and published two beautiful books that celebrate and strengthen the work of women in community media across Latin America: The Sound of Women of the Land and Sea and Voices Taking Flight: A Practical Guide for Women Community Communicators.
