Campaña para la reconstrucción de la radio comunitaria Totopo.

Radio Totopo es una radio comunitaria que desde hace más de 10 años transmite en la ciudad de Juchitán, Oaxaca, México. Su labor dentro de la comunidad le ha valido el respeto y respaldo de los pobladores por ser un espacio radial donde se reflejan culturalmente en su idioma diidxazá, la lengua de los Binnizá, además de ser el lugar de reunión para la Asamblea Popular de Pueblo Juchiteco.

Totopo transmite desde el Barrio de los Pescadores o la Séptima, lugar característico de la ciudad de Juchitán por ser el más antiguo, conformando un sentido de identidad, de arraigo y cultura propia entre obreros, alfareros, pescadores, amas de casa y comerciantes. Es a este público al cual se dirige la radio, que en esta cotidianidad, se inserta en la casa, en el taller, en el mercado, en la fiesta. Los radialistas saben que su permanencia en el barrio y la razón de ser de una radio comunitaria son los lazos que generan en su comunidad, así lo han venido haciendo desde hace una década y el año pasado no fue la excepción.

Después del terremoto de 8.2 del 7 de septiembre y del sismo de 6.1 del 23 de septiembre del 2017 los daños fueron múltiples e incalculables para los habitantes de esta región: un porcentaje considerable de las casas y de edificios principales como el mercado, el hospital y el palacio municipal se vinieron abajo, otros tienen daños estructurales y requieren su demolición.

En ese contexto de emergencia la radio ha tenido un rol esencial en la respuesta y la reconstrucción de su ciudad, ya que ha sido el punto de acopio y distribución de alimentos, herramientas y materiales que diversas organizaciones y personas solidarias han enviado. Pero no sólo eso, las instalaciones de la radio han funcionado como punto de organización y comunicación. Por ejemplo, los niños que se han quedado sin clases porque sus escuelas resultaron con daños estructurales han encontrado en el patio de la radio un lugar donde realizar actividades lúdicas de pintura y lectura. A su vez se sigue manteniendo el comedor comunitario, en el cual se cuida la adecuada alimentación de los niños, brigadistas y compañeros que llegan a apoyar. Y las personas que perdieron sus casas y siguen con estrés postraumático por el terremoto y sus constantes réplicas, encuentran en la radio un lugar donde platicar de sus experiencias y reconfortarse, acompañadas obviamente por brigadas de apoyo psicológico de universitarios de diferentes estados del país.

Y hacia fuera, en coordinación con las comunidades de Comitancillo y el Espinal el trabajo se ha centrado en la entrega de despensas, catres y hamacas, y cuando la lluvia llegó, se instalaron lonas y estructuras metálicas para construir refugios temporales. Una de sus más recientes actividades fue la confección de 300 huipiles y faldas que forman parte de su vestimenta tradicional para entregar a las mujeres mayores de edad.

Estas actividades obviamente no habrían sido posible sin la cooperación de todas las personas que han apoyado con dinero, materiales, víveres. La Radio ha sido un catalizador y coordinador de estas acciones ya que en el fondo lo que persigue Totopo es fortalecer el tejido comunitario y consolidar formas colectivas de reconstrucción, reparación y rearticulación entre los pueblos, ante el abandono gubernamental y del Fondo de Desastres que han priorizado el trato con las constructoras porque las reconstrucciones también son negocio.

En estos momentos difíciles que aún persisten, la radio no ha podido reanudar sus transmisiones de manera normal pues la casa que renta para dicho propósito resultó dañada y no está en condiciones de ser habitada a largo plazo.

Ellos priorizarón la atención con la comunidad y la emergencia no ha terminado. El trabajo que la radio desempeña no es sólo importante por estos momentos, su historia lo constata, Totopo ha sido fundamental en la defensa del territorio contra los parques eólicos. Para continuar con estas labores, la radio necesita hacerse de un terreno propio donde pueda reconstruirse, un lugar donde instalar nuevamente la cabina de radio, un espacio seguro para sus reuniones. Para adquirir un terreno donde edificar nuevamente la radio es que se está lanzando una convocatoria en el que todas las personas de buen corazón formen parte de un fondeo colectivo. Esta campaña es sólo parte de un proceso y ya se cuenta con un dinero base, pero falta más de la mitad para tener la cantidad necesaria que nos permitirá adquirir un pedacito de tierra.

Posteriormente tendremos que iniciar un proceso de autoconstrucción y acondicionamiento. Por el momento se necesita conseguir el dinero necesario para ello y no contamos más que con la Guendaliza´a que en los hechos significa el acto de compartir en comunidad, nuestra comunalidad.

Solidarity with Radio Totopo in Oaxaca, Mexico

Radio Totopo is a community radio that has transmitted from the city of Juchitán in Oaxaca, Mexico for more than 10 years. Totopo’s work in the community has earned it the respect and backing of local residents, who recognize the radio as a space that uses their diidxazá language to reflect their ancestral culture as Binnizá, or Zapotec, people. Totopo has also established itself as a vital cultural and community space that serves as a physical meeting point for community members. There children take academic classes; a gallery space features paintings and photographs, documentary screenings, concerts, and the sale of traditional food; and the Popular Assembly of the Juchiteco People holds regular meetings.

Totopo transmits from the Barrio of the Fishermen, or the Seventh, one of the most characteristic and oldest areas of the city of Juchitán that is marked by a sense of unique cultural identity and rootedness generated amongst working people, potters, fishermen, homemakers and merchants. It is to this public that Radio Totopo directs its content, accompanying peoples’ daily lives in their homes, workshops, markets and festivities. The broadcasters know that their presence in this barrio and their existence as a community radio depends on the links they cultivate with their community. This is how Radio Totopo has operated for more than a decade, and this past year was no exception.

In 2017, an 8.2 degree earthquake on September 7 as well as a 6.1 degree earthquake on September 23 brought incalculable damages to this part of Mexico. A considerable percentage of homes collapsed, along with important buildings such as the market, hospital, and city hall. Other buildings with structural damages are still slated for demolition. In this context of emergency the radio has played an essential role in the response and reconstruction of their city. Totopo has functioned as a collection and distribution center for the foodstuffs, tools and materials sent by diverse organizations and people. Totopo has also provided critical infrastructure and know-how for the organization and communication of local residents. Children who have not been able to attend classes because their schools were damaged during the earthquake have found in the radio’s patio a place to participate in recreational activities such as painting and reading. At the same time, the community kitchen continues to operate from the radio station, ensuring adequate nourishment for the children and compañerxs who arrive to help out. Finally, people who lost their homes and continue to experience post-traumatic stress from the earthquakes and its many afterschocks have found in the radio a place to converse and console one another, accompanied by the brigades of psychological support organized by Mexican universities.

Following the earthquake Radio Totopo has also coordinated with communities beyond Juchitán, such as Comitancillo and Espinal, to deliver provisions, cots, and hammocks. When heavy rains arrived, they also helped to install tarps and metal structures for temporary shelters. One of Totopo’s most recent activities involved the fabrication of 300 traditional blouses and skirts to be delivered to the older women of the community. While it is true that clothing has been sent to collection centers, the Zapotec women maintian a strong connection with their culture, and their traditional forms of dress are an important part of their identity.

These activities would not have been possible without the cooperation of many people who have supported with funds, materials and foodstuffs. The radio has played the fundamental role of catalyst and coordinator of this solidarity and mutual aid. Radio Totopo’s primary goal is to strengthen the social fabric of their community, consolidating collective forms of reconstruction and rearticulation between the peoples of the region. This in the face of the neglect of the Mexican government and Natural Disasters Fund, which has prioritized the signing of lucrative contracts with private builders.

During these ongoing difficult times, the radio has not been able to resume its normal transmissions. The rented house where the radio station operated has suffered damages and is not in conditions to be used in the long term. The emergency is not over, and the work carried out by Radio Totopo is fundamental not just in these moments but for years to come. The radio’s fundamental role in the defense of this territory from the imposition of wind turbine projects attests to this. To continue these labors, Totopo must acquire its own plot of land where it will be possible to reinstall the radio station and continue to host meetings in a secure manner. It is with the goal of acquiring this land that the radio and its allies are calling upon all collectives and individuals to join this collective fundraising effort. Through solidarity nearly half of the required amount has been raised, and we are counting on our extended community to help us collect the remainder so that Totopo can continue to maintain this vital communal space.
